What does getting dentures involve?

The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, colour, and fit. At the final appointment, your Denturist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit. It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty, however this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular Denturist visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.

Why does my speech sound funny?

Speech is formed with air exchange between your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Because your tongue is used to the shape of your old upper denture, and your new one is a bit different, your speech may be affected temporarily. You will find that your speech should return to normal within a few days.

What is a reline?

A reline is a simple procedure where we re-fit the inside surfaces of your dentures to ensure they are fitting properly. This procedure usually takes two days.

Everyone should have their dentures relined every 2-3 years to ensure that they are fitting properly. You should never wear a loose, ill-fitting denture for extended periods of time; it can cause a tremendous amount of damage to your mouth, often with little or no pain involved. Everyone should have their dentures checked at least once every two years to ensure good oral health.

Is there a solution for loose lower dentures?

Yes! Dental Implants are a permanent solution for loose dentures. Simply, implants are artificial tooth roots that can be placed in the bone of your ridges. Then, your dentures “snap” or “screw” into place, allowing you to eat and speak with confidence and no denture movement. Book a consultation with your Denturist today.

How long do dentures last?

On average, about 5 years for standard dentures and 7-10 years for precision dentures. It depends on many factors. If you have insurance coverage for dentures, they’ll usually give you some coverage for a new set every 5 years, depending on your plan.

Some people think that dentures will last a lifetime. Nothing could be further from the truth! Denture teeth wear down over time from daily use, slowly diminishing their ability to do their job properly. It is crucial to replace them when they are worn out. You cannot chew food effectively with worn-out teeth, which will affect your health. Visit your Denturist regularly for a check-up!

What should I use to clean my dentures?

We recommend using a soft bristle toothbrush to remove any food particles and then soaking your dentures in Renew Denture Cleaner for 20-30 minutes maximum 3-4 times a week. Make sure to rinse your dentures well under cool water before putting them back into your mouth.

It is not recommended to use toothpaste or denture brushes as they can be very abrasive and cause micro-scratches to the teeth and pink acrylic of your denture, which can also cause staining and plaque buildup.

What else should I know about Renew Denture Cleaner?

You can purchase Renew Denture Cleaner from our denture clinic. We always keep it in stock and offer sample packages for you to try! As it is a professional strength cleaner and is very concentrated, please do not soak your complete or partial dentures overnight.
